More Than a Gym: The Vision Behind The Well

Scott County is growing quickly. That growth has brought incredible opportunities to our community, but it has also created challenges. Like many growing communities, our infrastructure and gathering spaces have not always been able to keep pace with the number of families who now call Georgetown and Scott County home.

That was one of the primary inspirations behind building The Well, our new community athletic center.

At Grace Christian Church, we have always wanted to be more than a church that is open for an hour on Sunday morning. We don't believe the church is primarily a building or an event. We believe it is a community of people trying to love and care for others the way Jesus did. Our desire is to be present in our community seven days a week, and The Well gives us another opportunity to do that.

Athletics are a huge part of life in Scott County. Gyms are full, teams need places to practice, families are constantly traveling for training and competition, and there is always a need for additional activity space.

From the beginning, though, our dream was never simply to build a church gym. We wanted to build something that could be a gift to the entire community.

The members of our church will certainly use The Well, but our hope is that when people walk through the doors, they don't primarily think about whose building it is. We hope they see a place that belongs to Scott County—a place where kids can play, athletes can improve, adults can become healthier, teams can gather, and relationships can form.

The facility will host basketball and volleyball camps and training, youth and adult leagues, team rentals, open gym opportunities, group fitness memberships, and strength and agility training for competitive athletes. We also hope to develop partnerships with local teams, schools, organizations, businesses, and others who are already doing good work in our community.

But our vision goes beyond athletics.

One of the reasons we wanted to create a space like The Well is because we want to be in proximity to young people and families. We have watched mental health challenges and anxiety increase among young people, and we know that many kids carry tremendous pressure related to athletics, academics, the arts, social expectations, and simply trying to figure out who they are.

One program we are especially excited about is Players Box. Players Box is designed to help young people and parents navigate the pressure that comes with competition and performance. We want to help kids learn to love the moment they are in rather than becoming afraid of moments of pressure.

Sports provide an incredible environment for those conversations because athletics are about much more than wins and losses. They teach kids how to respond to failure, handle expectations, work with others, develop confidence, and persevere when things are difficult.

Ultimately, that is what we hope The Well becomes: a place where people get better at the things they love, but also a place where people are known and cared for.

The Well has already been made possible through the generosity and sacrifice of hundreds of people at Grace Christian Church who believed in the vision and helped bring it to life. As we look toward the future, we are also excited to build partnerships with businesses and organizations throughout Scott County.

There are opportunities for local businesses to partner with The Well through digital advertising throughout the facility, community partnerships, and naming partnerships for the court and other areas of the building. More than simply sponsorships, we hope these relationships give businesses an opportunity to invest directly in a space that serves families, athletes, and the broader community every day.

Five years from now, our greatest hope isn't simply that people say The Well has great facilities or great programs. We hope they say it became a meaningful part of Scott County.

We hope kids will say they grew up playing there. We hope athletes will say someone believed in them there. We hope parents will say they found community there. We hope teams, businesses, schools, and organizations will say they found a partner there.

And most importantly, we hope people will say that whenever they walked through the doors, they felt welcomed, valued, and loved.

For us, that would be success.

The Well isn't something we built simply for our church.

It is something our church built for our community.
