They say the best way to predict the future is to create it. In Georgetown, KY, our local industries and private businesses are doing exactly that. By investing time, talent, and resources into our schools today, they are laying the groundwork for a more prosperous, innovation-driven tomorrow.
A Hands-On Look at Innovation
Recently, a Scott County classroom hummed with a unique kind of energy. Fifth-grade students at Lemons Mill weren’t just reading about biology—they were living it. Each lab group approached their dissection trays with a mix of focus and curiosity and, following safety training, began a hands-on exploration of a cow eye. For many students, this was their first time participating in a lab of this kind, and it sparked curiosity, excitement, and thoughtful discussion about science and how what they are learning relates to how their own bodies work.
This wasn’t a college prep course—it was an elementary science lesson made possible by a Driving Possibilities grant from the Toyota USA Foundation and TMMK. Guided by their teacher, students engaged in activities like this that allow them to take an active role in their learning. They ask questions, investigate real-world phenomena, and collaborate to solve problems. The shift to hands-on activities has helped many students build confidence and see themselves as capable scientists and engineers!

Why This Matters
These moments are more than just feel-good stories. They represent a strategic investment in our most valuable resource: the future workforce.
Bridging the Gap: By supporting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields, companies like Toyota and their Driving Possibilities initiative are ensuring that Scott County students develop the technical and creative skills necessary for modern industrial careers.
Building Community Roots: When industry leaders step into the classroom, they show students that there are incredible opportunities right here in their own backyard.
Future-Proofing our Economy: Innovation and creativity are the building blocks of a resilient local economy. By fostering these traits in our schools, we are preparing for the industries of 2040 and beyond.
The Data Behind the Success
The impact of Toyota’s investment isn't just anecdotal—it’s measurable. Survey data from the 2025-26 school year reveals that Driving Possibilities is fundamentally shifting student perspectives across Scott County Schools. Students are surveyed at the beginning of the year about their thoughts on careers, STEM, and their own academic confidence. At the end of the year, those same students are asked those same questions again. Based upon student responses, Toyota's investment in these schools is directly correlated with increased student awareness, confidence, and resilience.
This data from the survey illustrates three critical pillars of student development supported by Toyota’s partnership:
Encouraging STEM Pursuits: With a 7-percentage-point increase in career awareness across the district, students are beginning to see themselves in the high-tech roles of the future.
Increasing Academic Confidence: 90% of students reported feeling more confident in their ability to succeed in STEM because of the DP Toyota initiative. This confidence is the primary driver of academic achievement.
Overcoming Barriers to Success: Industry investment provides the "missing pieces." 91% of students feel they have more of what they need to do their best in school because of this support. At Lemons Mill Elementary, that figure reached a staggering 100%.
A Call to Partnership
Toyota is "driving possibilities" by increasing student learning in critical areas, but the road to a thriving future has room for everyone. Whether through grants, mentorship programs, or equipment donations, every investment in Scott County Schools is an investment in our collective success.
The curiosity ignited in a science lab today will become the breakthrough innovation of tomorrow. Let’s continue to work together to ensure that Georgetown remains a place where industry and education move forward—hand in hand.
How Your Business Can Get Involved
The success of the Driving Possibilities initiative highlights a powerful truth: when local industry partners with education, the entire community wins. We invite other Georgetown and Scott County businesses to join this movement. There are many ways to contribute, regardless of your company's size:
Mentorship & Guest Speaking: Share your expertise directly with students. Whether it's a presentation on modern manufacturing or a Q&A about engineering, your real-world experience is invaluable.
Work-Based Learning & Internships: Open your doors to high school students for job shadowing or structured internships. Providing a first-hand look at local career paths helps keep our brightest talent right here at home.
Resource & Equipment Grants: Technology and lab supplies evolve quickly. Donations or grants for specialized equipment—like the kits used in Mrs. Taylor’s science lab—ensure our students are learning on the tools of tomorrow.
Advisory Board Participation: Help shape the curriculum. By serving on school or district advisory committees, you can ensure that the skills being taught in the classroom align with the actual needs of the local industrial sector.
